Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum
The kids will love checking out this quaint railroad museum. It is chock full of historical items from the Seaboard Airline Railroad, Virginia Railway, and others. You’ll see real parts from steam locomotives, cast iron signs, railroad tools, and many smaller items. The museum is also home to two scratch-built model railways that won awards at the national level. It is all housed in a beautiful Queen Anne-style building that is a sight to behold.
Riddick’s Folly House Museum
The Riddick’s Folly House Museum was built in 1837 and serves as a powerful link to the area’s history and culture. Taking a guided tour through the beautiful home is a great way to get in touch with some of Virginia’s historic architecture and beauty. Inside, gilded moldings and ceiling medallions decorate the first of four floors. Twenty-one rooms and sixteen fireplaces fill the house with plenty of room to explore. The realistic décor and furnishings will send you back in time to 1800s Suffolk. Complete your visit with a trip to the gift shop, commemorating your visit to one of the locations of the National Register for Historic Places.
Golfing
For the golf fanatic, Suffolk couldn’t be a better place. In and around the city within a half hour there are eight lush courses to play. Enjoy a tour of these courses like the Suffolk Golf Course or the Nansemond River Golf Club. Playing these beautiful 135 holes will put a smile on the face of any golfer.
Suffolk Farmers’ Market
Opening in early May each year, Saturday mornings and Wednesday afternoons make the Suffolk Farmers’ Market a great attraction to check out. Shop for locally grown produce, organically raised poultry and eggs, honey, milk, baked goods, and more! The goodness doesn’t just stop with the food. Artisan-crafted goods, performers, book signings, crafts, and more all make the farmers’ market a great morning for the whole family. Enjoy some time in the open-air market with free admission and support from local farmers.
Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge
Anything but dismal, the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge is one of the best things to see in Suffolk. Enjoy 113,000 acres of American wilderness. Everyone will enjoy hiking, boating, fishing, and even hunting. The refuge is home to black bears, otters, and more than 200 species of birds. The beautiful land is also a site on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Program.
Virginia Beach
If you’re itching for a day trip, the beautiful beaches of Virginia Beach are just a 45-minute drive away. Springtime means it’s perfect for an afternoon out before returning for a great dinner in Suffolk. Virginia Beach has plenty of attractions for the whole family. Enjoy an aquarium, lighthouse, and yes, the pristine beaches.
Seasonal Events
The return of warmer weather means plenty of events around Suffolk. On March 24th plays host to the American Girl Program’s “Meet Felicity Merriman”. Inspire the next generation by meeting a girl straight out of Virginia in the Revolutionary War time period. On April 21st the annual Suffolk Earth and Arts Festival brings together artists, musicians, and garden professionals from around the area. Enjoy live music and buy some new décor and plants for around the home. In May, Suffolk hosts several drive-in movies in the beautiful Bennett’s Creek Park. That’s not all.
