Taking a Closer Look: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow at Virginia Beach Town Center

In a little over two decades, Virginia Beach Town Center has become a regional destination for shopping, business, and the arts. Covering 24 sprawling blocks and backed by $500 million of private and public investments, it’s no wonder Virginia locals and tourists flock to Town Center year-round. With no shortage of things to do, the future of Town Center looks just as bright as its past and present.

A Vision of Top Quality
In the late 90’s, Virginia Beach was known as a Navy town that happened to have an abundance of resorts along its coastal shore. That all changed when Lou Haddad, CEO of Armada Hoffler, had a vision for the area surrounding his company’s headquarters. He imagined that the underutilized land could be something far more valuable to the area, blending the best aspects of urban living and a resort city.

What followed was the development of an urban area attracting visitors from Hampton Roads, Norfolk, and even Williamsburg. Town Center’s growth has come in six phases, each bringing new, exciting features to the area. It was first anchored by the Armada Hoffler building, a massive Dick’s Sporting Goods, and the Cosmopolitan Apartments. All of which were bolstered by the presence of abundant parking, surrounding retail shops, and office space.

The visionary partnership between Armada Hoffler and the City of Virginia Beach has quickly blossomed into something special for the area.

Popular Present Attraction
Currently, Town Center has something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for fine retail, trendy small businesses, delicious eats, or year-round events, there’s a good chance it’s happening at Town Center.

McCormick and Schmick’s and Ruth’s Chris are great for fine dining while Lamia’s Crepes and Quirks are ideal for a quite bite. Meanwhile, the Muse Paintbar, Zeiders American Dream Theater, and a 12-screen Regal Movie theater keep visitors entertained all day (and night). Recently, a brand new Wegman’s Supermarket opened, giving tenants access to groceries close to home.

Throughout the year, a calendar jam-packed with events means Town Center brings visitors back on a regular basis. From cooking classes to live music and craft demos to karaoke night, there’s no shortage of fun things to do.

Top it all off with more than 30 retail stores and Town Center becomes an attractive destination or place to call home for people of all ages and interests.

Looking Forward
While Virginia Beach Town Center is already a hot area, there’s plenty of room for improvement in the years to come. In fact, the upgrades are already in the preliminary stages of planning. Phase seven of the Town Center project will include a 250,000 square foot high-rise that aims to attract a major tenant and bring thousands of jobs to the area.

Still, such developments are a few years off. In the meantime, Town Center visitors can look forward to smaller additions. The masterminds behind the project hope to add a variety of Shake-Shack style restaurants and retailers that aren’t yet in the regional market.

On top of this, there have been rumors of the developers taking bold moves towards a public transportation system that connects Town Center to the City of Virginia Beach and beyond. Their goal is to transform the area into a gateway to the Mid-Atlantic.
